In February 2023, the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI) published data on motorcycle sales. The data revealed an increase in exports compared to January 2023. AISI's website reported that throughout February 2023, 575,502 motorcycles were sold domestically, representing a 6.4% decrease compared to January 2023, when 615,416 motorcycles were sold. Nonetheless, the number was higher than during the same period last year, which was consistent with trends from previous years.
Automatic scooters continue to dominate the largest sales with 90.42%, followed by standard motorcycles at 4.95%, and sport motorcycles at 4.63%. Electric motorcycles are not included in the AISI list as it is a new industry, and no AISI member markets their domestically produced electric motorcycles in Indonesia.
From January to February 2023, domestic motorcycle sales reached 1,190,918 units, which is much higher than sales in the past three years. This year, AISI aims to sell 5.4-5.6 million motorcycles, the same as last year, and market trends suggest that this target can be achieved.
Notably, the increase in motorcycle sales in Indonesia is not only supported domestically, but also by exports. Despite sales decreasing in February 2023, the number of Indonesian-made motorcycles exported increased. Throughout February 2023, 45,627 motorcycles were sent abroad, an increase of about 9,000 units compared to the previous month, which recorded exports of 39,829 units.
Automatic scooters make up 57.47% of motorcycles exported, followed by sport motorcycles at 27.18%, and standard motorcycles at 15.34%. However, the total number of motorcycles exported in January and February 2023 decreased compared to the same period in the past three years, indicating that domestic producers need to increase their marketing efforts.
