Strengthen the Quality of Fishery Exports from the Sebatik Border

Head of the Fish Quarantine Agency, Quality Control and Safety of Fishery Products (BKIPM), Pamuji Lestari said the border is a door that can facilitate export of fishery products. "Just like at the border in Sebatik, we entrust it to continue to strengthen the quality assurance side," said the figure who is familiarly called Tari after inspecting the Sebatik border.

Dance reminds the border can be both an opportunity and a challenge to increase the quantity and quality of exports. If this is implemented, it will have an impact on the welfare of the fishermen around, especially Sebatik Island. "The presence of BKIPM here is vital because we represent the state in the border area," he explained. On this occasion, Tari also appreciated the synergy and spirit of mutual cooperation of BKIPM officers in Sebatik. This is indicated by the increase in exports in the last two months. During October 2022, 28,770 kilograms (kg) of fishery commodities were sent from Sebatik to Tawau, Malaysia. This number increased to 201,314 kg in November 2022.

"Of course this is an extraordinary increase, therefore we ask that it be maintained," he said. As is well known, Tari witnessed the loading of fishery products to be exported to Tawau, Malaysia. In fact, Tari also handed over HACCP certificates to 3 original Sebatik fish processing units (UPI) that had met the standards for carrying out fishery export activities.
Previously, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono reminded the BKIPM staff to ensure the quality assurance of export products because this is important in the world market. According to him, quality assurance is important as an effort to increase world market confidence in Indonesian fishery products.

As is known, Quality Assurance refers to the Regulation of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Number 10 of 2021 concerning Standards for Business Activities and Products in the Implementation of Risk-Based Business Licensing in the Maritime and Fisheries Sector, as well as Regulation of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Number 19 of 2010 concerning Control of Quality and Safety Assurance Systems Fishery Products. The Quality Assurance activities prepared include, in the cultivation area, verification of the application of good fish hatchery standards, good fish rearing standards and good methods of making fish feed. Then monitoring and surveillance in order to prevent entry and spread of quarantine fish diseases, fulfillment of biosecurity standardization in UUPI, quality monitoring by testing samples of feed, water, ice to supporting activities such as technical guidance and assistance.

So that in this case, it is hoped that Quality Assurance can be guided by both at the Central and UPT levels within the scope of BKIPM, together with related parties. He emphasized that this work plan is inseparable from the success of the 2021-2024 KKP priority policies/programs. The 2021 - 2024 KKP priority policies include implementing measured catches in each Fishery Management Area for ecological sustainability. Second, the development of export-oriented aquaculture for superior commodities, including shrimp, lobster, crab and seaweed.
Finally, the development of fishing villages based on local wisdom in fresh, brackish and marine waters to alleviate poverty and maintain the sustainability of local fish, especially those with high economic value. So that in an effort to encourage exports of fishery products, KKP focuses on encouraging education related to production to processing so that they meet global standards. In addition, skilled workers are also prepared to produce human resources capable of supporting the fishing industry.
Secretary General of the KKP, Antam Novambar added, in 2022 measurable catches will be implemented, as well as the development of export-oriented aquaculture, as well as the development of aquaculture villages based on local wisdom. "God willing, the target of increasing the export value of fishery products that has been set in the 2022 Performance Indicators can be achieved," said Antam.

Furthermore, related to fisheries exports, in the last 5 years, Indonesia's exports of fishery products experienced a surplus and increased 6.1% per year. From USD 4.5 billion in 2017 to USD 5.7 billion in 2021. Of this amount, 44.3% is from the United States market, 15.6% is from the Chinese market, 9.5% ASEAN, and only 5.7% with a value of USD328 million on the European Union market. Then, related to exports, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries targets the export value of fishery products to increase to USD 7.13 billion in 2022.
