President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) attended the Opening of the ASEAN-EU Summit, Brussels, on Wednesday (14/12/2022). Jokowi appeared to be greeted by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel. Jokowi shook hands with the two and took a group photo on the red carpet. The summit itself was held at the European Commission Headquarters in Brussels. This is the first summit between EU leaders and ASEAN member states. This summit also marks 45 years of diplomatic relations.
European Council President Charles Michel and ASEAN 2022 Chair Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen will co-chair the EU-ASEAN anniversary summit. Quoted from the official EU website, the ASEAN-EU Summit is an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment of the EU and its Member States to the EU strategic partnership -ASEAN.
It will offer a political forum for the EU and ASEAN to demonstrate their shared commitment to a rules-based international order, respect for international law and the promotion of effective multilateralism. On the sidelines of the Summit, State Secretary for Foreign Trade of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Håkan Jevrell held a meeting with Coordinating Minister for Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.
As is well known, Indonesia will hold the ASEAN chairmanship and Sweden will hold the 2023 European Union presidency. "The two parties certainly want to take strategic synergy steps, taking advantage of the important roles of Indonesia and Sweden, which hold the chairmanship in their respective regions in 2023," said the Coordinating Minister for Airlangga.
Sweden also supports accelerating the completion of the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) negotiations as soon as possible. Indonesia believes that the trade agreement can be a strong impetus for efforts to increase cooperation in the economic, trade and investment fields between Indonesia and the European Union.
