Marine Spatial Management Becomes a Driver for Marine Development

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) in the context of commemorating Archipelago Day 2022, emphasized its commitment to making the management of sea space a driving force in national maritime development. Wise management of marine space is carried out to balance ecological and economic activities while keeping aquatic ecosystems healthy, productive and sustainable through the principles of a sustainable blue economy.


"Management of marine space is intended to support sustainable fisheries while protecting the sea by ensuring spatial planning of seas, coasts and small islands, managing conservation areas to support sustainable management of fish resources, protecting coastal, marine and small island ecosystems so that they are sustainable and efficient. as well as increasing the utilization of marine services while still paying attention to sustainability," said Secretary of the Directorate General of Marine Spatial Management Hendra Yusran Siry on Wednesday 7 December 2022.


KKP, said Hendra, currently carries five priority programs based on blue economy. "Of the five priority programs, three of them are the task of the Directorate General of Marine Spatial Management, namely expansion of conservation areas, management of coastal and small islands and handling of waste at sea. This shows that the management of sea space is a driving force in the development of maritime affairs and fisheries," he said while speaking at the 2022 Archipelago Day Special Dialogue with the theme of the Maritime Sector as the Main Stream of National Development.


The KKP, he continued, strongly supports and encourages local governments to develop their potential, especially in managing coastal and small islands through measurable fishing programs, development of advanced fishing villages and cultivation villages, management of water conservation areas and marine tourism, provision of infrastructure facilities on the coast. and small islands, as well as encouraging investment in small islands while maintaining a balance between ecological activities and economic activities, while keeping aquatic ecosystems healthy, productive and sustainable.
The Governor of Southeast Sulawesi Province Ali Mazi said that in order to maintain tourism potential in Southeast Sulawesi, protect ecosystems and utilize natural resource potential, competent human resources and the support of all parties, including the intellectual community, are needed.
Meanwhile, Member of Commission X DPR RI Zainudin Maliki emphasized that Nusantara Day was not an activity that was packaged as a ceremonial but was expected to become a momentum so that the maritime sector would become the mainstream of national development.


"I hope the state can be present to provide opportunities for coastal communities to have added value with their position near the sea. We need regulations that favor coastal communities so that the economy improves and their lives are more prosperous," he said. In line with the blue economy policy, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono has initiated five priority programs that are ready to be implemented to support the development of the marine and fisheries sector in a sustainable manner. The five include expansion of conservation areas with a target of 30 percent of the total Indonesian waters area, implementation of quota-based measurable fishing policies, development of sustainable aquaculture in coastal, marine and inland areas, sustainable management of coasts and small islands to avoid damage due to high activity. economy, as well as handling plastic waste in the sea through the Ocean Love Month program.
