Jokowi Surprised 3 Indonesian Mining Commodities Become World Contest

President Joko Widodo or Jokowi admitted that he was surprised when he found the fact that many countries were dependent on Indonesia. Following this, many mining commodities are being fought over by countries in the world. "Oh, it depends, it depends, it depends, how come there are so many. I'm surprised too," said Jokowi at the Kompas 100 CEO Forum 2022 event at the State Palace, Jakarta, quoted Monday (12/12). Jokowi noted that there are at least three superior mining commodities who are wanted by foreign countries. First, is coal which is used as a source of electricity for various industrial activities. "Once we stop our coal for only two weeks, there are lots of calls to me," said Jokowi. Second, Crude Palm Oil or CPO. It is known, CPO is crude palm oil obtained from the extraction of palm fruit flesh that has not undergone refining. "Once we stop (CPO exports), yes because I have to stop. There are many questions from outside the IMF and the World Bank, why stop," said Jokowi. Third, Nickel. Nickel is one of the many mineral metals found in the earth's crust with a silvery white base color, shiny, and quite hard. Nickel is a mining product that has a million benefits for human life. Not surprisingly, nickel prices continue to increase from time to time. "I have checked this several times. Who depends on us (Nickel). It turns out that there are a lot of them," said Jokowi. Therefore, the government continues to aggressively encourage the downstream industry in the mining sector. This is to increase added value for the Indonesian economy. "We have to be able to design other countries depending on us. We have to. Don't let us just become branches," said Jokowi.

Quoting Trade Map data for 2021, China, India, the United States to the European Union are dependent on Indonesia's superior commodity products. It was recorded that China's dependence on Indonesian coal products reached USD 22.7 billion. China's imports of iron ore products from Indonesia also reached USD 13.1 billion. In addition, China also imported USD 6.7 billion worth of CPO, USD 972 million worth of copper and USD 240.3 million worth of nickel products. Likewise with India which is very dependent on coal, CPO, rubber and tin products from Indonesia. India's respective import values from Indonesia are USD 6.3 billion (coal), USD 4 billion (CPO), USD 323 million (rubber) and USD 247 million (tin). Meanwhile, Indonesian products that are the mainstay of the United States are rubber products, CPO, fishery products and wood products. In 2021, Uncle Sam's country imported USD 2.4 billion worth of rubber products, USD 2.1 billion of CPO, USD 1.4 million of fishery products and USD 1 billion of wood products. Minister of Trade (Mendag) Zulkifli Hasan visited the State Palace, Jakarta , Tuesday (6/12/2022). The man who is familiarly called Zulhas admitted that he would hold a meeting with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) regarding downstream bauxite. "Today's downstream regarding bauxite. So tin will try to be addressed so that it can provide optimal results because it affects the environmental impact with extraordinary damage," Zulhas told the media crew at the State Palace in Jakarta.Zulhas encouraged that today's meeting could produce optimal results from the problems that are being fixed. This is because the main concern of the government at this time is how to produce energy that is more environmentally friendly. “So it must be given optimal results, further studied. Bauxite must be downstreamed, otherwise our environment will be very disturbed, it will not provide high added value," Zulhas explained. Apart from bauxite, Zulhas will also discuss nickel downstream which is planned to be executed next year. According to him, the reason is in line with bauxite, all for the sake of non-negotiable environmentally friendly energy. "There is no choice, it has to be, because of that it is possible that later there will be an electric motor, hydropower energy, so it is discussed, but it will be discussed further," said the Ketum PAN. mining even though currently Indonesia has lost a lawsuit at the WTO regarding nickel exports. Even Jokowi requested that the cessation of exports in the form of raw materials not only stop at nickel commodities.

"We can no longer export in the form of raw materials, export in the form of raw materials, no. Once we get the investment, someone builds it, cooperates with the outside and inside or the center with the regions, Jakarta with the regions, we will get the added value. " said Jokowi when opening the 2022 National Investment Coordination Meeting in Jakarta, Wednesday (30/11/2022). The Head of State gave an example, several years ago Indonesia still exported nickel in the form of raw materials whose value only reached USD 1.1 billion. After the government owned a smelter and stopped exports in the form of raw materials, in 2021 nickel exports jumped 18 times to USD 20.8 billion or more than IDR 300 trillion. As a result of this policy, Indonesia was sued by the European Union at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Even though Indonesia lost the case, Jokowi reminded his staff to appeal and continue to downstream other mining materials such as bauxite.  "Like the case of nickel, from IDR 20 trillion it jumped to more than IDR 300 trillion, so that our trade balance has always had a surplus for 29 months, which has always been negative before, has always had a balance deficit for decades. Just 29 months ago, we always had a surplus. This is what we are headed," he continued. Jokowi emphasized that the lawsuit is the right of other countries that feel disturbed by the policies of the Indonesian government. For the European Union, for example, if nickel is processed in Indonesia, many industries there will be closed and unemployment will increase. However, he emphasized that Indonesia also has the right to become a developed country.
