Food Issues at G20, Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef): Strengthen Economic Diplomacy

Indonesia can take a bigger role in promoting an open, fair, predictable and transparent food trade at the G20. Deputy Director of the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) Eko Listiyanto assessed that the recent momentum of increasing protectionism in the food sector should serve as a warning for Indonesia to encourage domestic food trade based on data and research. As for the context of external relations, Indonesia needs to build cooperation with commodity-producing countries in the G20, such as with Turkey or other countries. "Regarding commodities, it has a strategic role, if we want to contribute to this discourse, of course it has something to do with the WTO," said Eko as reported by Antara, Sunday (15/5/2022).

Eko reminded that the world is currently protecting the people of each country. So to encourage fair and transparent commodity trade, a fair policy must first be implemented. "Actually, the key factor that makes developed countries win is because with data and cooperation networks between countries, they can prove and be able to push their agendas related to commodity trade," said the Indef economist. Previously, the Presidency of the G20 Working Group on Agriculture would declare a commitment to address three priority issues in the global agriculture sector, from food security to digital agriculture. The Head of the Foreign Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture who is also a representative of the Working Group on Agriculture for the G20 2022 Presidency, Ade Candradijaya, said that the agricultural working group has identified three priority issues as the main issues that we will raise in the declaration of the ministers of agriculture. The first priority issue is building a resilient and sustainable food and agriculture system. The second issue is to promote an open, fair, predictable and transparent food trade. The third is encouraging innovative agricultural businesses through digital farming to improve the lives of farmers in rural areas.
