BPS: Processing Industry Becomes the Highest Source of Indonesia's Economic Growth

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the manufacturing industry was again the source of the highest growth for the Indonesian economy in the first quarter of 2022, after in the first quarter of 2021 the sector was held back by the COVID-19 pandemic. "Thus, the engines of economic growth have begun to show their role and the national economy has begun to return to the period before the pandemic hit," said BPS Head Margo Yuwono at a press conference in Jakarta, Monday. In the first quarter of 2022, the manufacturing industry became the source of the country's highest economic growth at 1.06 percent, followed by the trade sector at 0.75 percent, transportation and warehousing at 0.57 percent, construction at 0.49 percent, and other sectors at 2.14 percent. . According to him, this condition is much different when compared to the first quarter of 2021, where the manufacturing industry has actually become one of the sources of the contraction of the Indonesian economy, with a share of 0.29 percent. Thus, the role of the manufacturing industry has begun to return to normal conditions before the pandemic hit, where in the first quarter of 2019 the sector contributed 0.82 percent and became the source of the highest growth for the domestic economy.

At that time the composition of other sectors was also unchanged, namely trade in the second position of the highest growth source with a share of 0.7 percent, transportation and warehousing 0.23 percent, construction 0.59 percent, and other sectors 2.72 percent. He explained that almost all business sectors in the first quarter of 2022 were able to grow positively, namely the manufacturing industry 5.07 percent compared to the same period last year (year-on-year/yoy), trade 5.71 percent, agriculture 1.16 percent. , and mining 3.82 percent.
Then the transportation and warehousing sector jumped 15.79 percent, information and communication 7.14 percent, financial services 1.64 percent, real estate 3.78 percent, accommodation and food and drink 6.56 percent, and other services 8.24 percent. Likewise with company services which grew 5.96 percent, health services 4.38 percent, electricity and gas procurement 7.04 percent, and water supply 1.29 percent. Meanwhile, he said the government administration and education services sectors in the first quarter of this year contracted by 1.45 percent and 1.7 percent on an annual basis, respectively. "Government administration contracted because the realization of personnel spending, especially the APBD, contracted 4.09 percent and education services due to a 0.24 percent decrease in personnel spending on education," he explained.
