Surplus, Indonesia's Fisheries Trade Balance Reaches USD 1.3 Billion

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) recorded a positive performance in the Marine and Fisheries Sector in the first quarter of 2022. The trade balance of fishery products experienced a surplus of USD 1.39 billion, an increase of 21.78% compared to the same period the previous year. "Of course this is good news at the moment of Eid, because it shows increasing export performance under the leadership of Minister Trenggono," said Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products (PDSPKP), Artati Widiarti, in a statement, Tuesday (3/5/2022).
Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the export value of fishery products in March 2022 reached USD 548.35 million or equivalent to Rp. 7.87 trillion. This figure is up 22.48% compared to February 2022, and an increase of 14.87% compared to the value of exports in March of the previous year. Artati explained, cumulatively in the period January – March 2022 or quarter 1 2022, the export value of fishery products reached USD 1.53 billion, an increase of 21.63% compared to the same period in 2021. "This is equivalent to Rp. 21.95 trillion and the increase is extraordinary compared to the same period last year. This means that our products are increasingly in demand in the export market," she said. During that period, the United States became the main export destination country with a value of USD 727.27 million. Then followed by China at USD 214.39 million, Japan at USD 151.62 million, ASEAN at USD 151.26 million, and the European Union at USD 78.17 million.

In terms of commodities, Shrimp is the favorite with a value of USD621.92 million or 40.64% of the total export value, followed by Tuna-Cakalang-Tongkol with USD 189.53 million (12.39%), Crab-Crab USD 172.56 million (11.28%), Squid-Cut-Octopus USD 154.53 million (10.10%), Seaweed USD 114.26 million (7.47%), and Tilapia USD 14.86 million (0.97% )."The figure of 47.53% of our export value is generated from the United States market," continued Artati. In the midst of increasing exports, the value of Indonesian fishery imports in quarter 1-2022 was only 9.14% of the export value. BPS recorded the import value of USD 139.89 million since January-March this year. "Alhamdulillah, the value of our imports is still below 10% of the export value, this confirms Indonesia as a net exporter of fishery products. We are optimistic that the export value will continue to increase," she concluded.
