The transportation of hydrogen is a crucial barrier preventing the wider adoption of the clean energy carrier; pipelines however provide a cost-competitive basis to transfer hydrogen at low costs. With this in mind, Tenaris has successfully qualified its line pipeline of medium and large diameters, to allow hydrogen contents of 100% at 200 bar. Tenaris is addressing the need for reliable and high-performance materials in hydrogen environments with the development of THEra™. This is a new technology that offers long-lasting and completely recyclable material with a verified product lifecycle, thanks to material testing in pressurized hydrogen environments.
Philippe Darcis, Senior Director Pipeline Technology at Tenaris, said, “The experimental activity we carried out … demonstrates the potential of THERA™ solutions for hydrogen pipeline transportation of up to 200 bar with an extra safety margin.
“Due to the susceptibility of steel to hydrogen embrittlement the pipeline material needs to be qualified to demonstrate its readiness for hydrogen transportation and the new standards and guidelines require specific characterizations in gaseous hydrogen environments.”
