Indonesia’s government has reaffirmed that all imported products from the United States must obtain halal certification before they can be sold or circulated in the Indonesian market, ensuring compliance with the nation’s Halal Product Assurance Law. The Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) stressed that even with Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA) with foreign halal institutions, the halal certification requirement remains mandatory for products in categories that must be halal, and goods must carry appropriate halal labels as per national regulations. Recognition under MRA allows halal certificates issued in the U.S. to be acknowledged in Indonesia, simplifying but not removing the need for certification.
Officials highlighted that the policy reinforces consumer protection and regulatory clarity while supporting international trade cooperation. Registered foreign halal institutions in the U.S. can issue certificates that are recognized in Indonesia, and non-halal products are exempt from halal certification but must be clearly labeled as such. This approach aligns with Indonesia’s broader efforts to uphold consistency in halal standards and enhance market transparency for imported goods, including those from the U.S.
