The Indonesian government has clarified that under the newly agreed Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with the United States, imported food and beverages from the US must continue to meet Indonesia’s halal certification standards, reinforcing consumer protection and upholding the country’s regulatory framework. Government officials stressed that products containing non-halal ingredients must also be clearly labeled as such, ensuring transparency and trust for the domestic market.
While certain manufactured goods such as cosmetics, medical devices, and other non-food items may have relaxed halal certification requirements under the trade agreement, all imports are still required to comply with quality, safety, and product information standards, and mutual recognition arrangements with US halal bodies support streamlined certification acceptance. This balanced approach aims to boost trade while respecting legal and cultural expectations in Indonesia’s diverse market.
