Indonesia is set to enhance its shipbuilding sector to transform logistics, reinforce food security, and increase manufacturing competitiveness, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita announced. With maritime transport forming the backbone of inter-island goods distribution, the government’s strategy focuses on integrating supply chains, upgrading production technology, improving workforce skills, and expanding financing schemes to maximize the sector’s multiplier effect on raw materials, components, infrastructure, and logistics services.
The country has 342 shipyards across 29 provinces, capable of producing various vessel types, but low demand and dependence on imported materials have limited domestic content and shipyard utilization. To stimulate growth, the government is implementing fiscal incentives, low-interest financing, export assignment schemes, and streamlined permitting. A priority program to build 975 vessels presents significant opportunities to boost output, capacity use, and competitiveness, positioning Indonesia’s maritime industry as a key driver of national logistics and connectivity.
