Indonesia Prepares to Begin Rice Exports in April 2026

Indonesia is preparing to start exporting rice in April 2026, signaling a major shift from its long-standing position as a rice-importing country. The government is confident this transition can be achieved as domestic production continues to strengthen and national food stocks reach historic highs. The move is expected to mark a new milestone for Indonesia’s agricultural sector and reflect improved food security management.

In 2025, Indonesia produced at least 34 million tons of unhusked rice, while rice production for 2026 is projected to rise to 34.77 million tons, exceeding earlier estimates. National rice reserves reached 3.32 million tons in January, the highest level ever recorded. With the peak harvest season occurring between February and April, authorities see strong potential to export up to 1 million tons of rice, provided procurement by the State Logistics Agency remains consistent. This positive outlook highlights Indonesia’s readiness to support regional food supply while strengthening its role in the global agricultural market.
