Indonesia’s traditional herbal medicine (jamu) industry is preparing to expand into the global market by aligning with international standards. The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) expressed support for the Indonesian Natural Jamu Practitioners Association (PPJAI) following its trade mission to the United States in November 2025. The mission included discussions with Amazon’s Fulfillment Center and coordination with the Indonesian Embassy in Washington. BPOM emphasized its commitment to providing technical assistance so that jamu products can meet strict U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements related to safety, quality, and scientific validation.
During the meeting, PPJAI and BPOM discussed strategies to strengthen industry consolidation, upgrade products into standardized herbal medicines (Obat Herbal Terstandar), and secure FDA permits. PPJAI plans to gradually enter the U.S. market by learning its distribution systems and regulatory processes, while promoting regional production hubs such as Banyumas Raya. PPJAI leaders noted that many producers already apply Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, and with BPOM’s support, Indonesia hopes to accelerate certification and realize jamu exports to the United States and other international markets.
