Indonesia aims to strengthen its position as a global coffee hub, according to Trade Minister Budi Santoso. The initiative aligns with a proposal from the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), which sees strong potential for Indonesia—one of the world’s top coffee producers—to play a larger role in the global coffee market. Santoso stated that the government is open to promoting Indonesia as a coffee trading and distribution center, although influencing global coffee prices would require careful coordination with international coffee organizations, producing countries, and major consumer markets. He emphasized that becoming a global hub is a long-term effort that must begin with building credibility, improving market governance, and increasing Indonesia’s active participation in international coffee forums.
Kadin Chairman Anindya Bakrie supported the initiative by highlighting Indonesia’s strong production capacity and diverse coffee varieties. Indonesia ranks third among global coffee producers, after Brazil and Colombia, and is known for producing arabica, robusta, and specialty coffees such as kopi luwak. Bakrie expressed optimism that Indonesia could eventually host a global coffee trade center, reflecting its strategic importance in the international coffee supply chain. Strengthening downstream industries, improving quality standards, and expanding global market access are seen as key steps toward realizing Indonesia’s ambition to become a central player in the global coffee industry.
