Private Sector Calls for Review of Indonesia’s 30,000-Ton Meat Import Quota

Indonesia’s plan to import around 297,000 tons of meat in 2026 has drawn attention from private businesses, as only 30,000 tons are allocated to private importers, while the majority is assigned to state-owned enterprises. The policy aims to strengthen government-led food supply management, with allocations designated for various sources and industrial needs. However, business groups note that the reduced quota represents a significant adjustment compared with previous years and encourages closer dialogue to ensure supply remains aligned with market demand.

Industry associations have emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced role between state-owned and private enterprises in meeting national meat demand, particularly for the hospitality and food service sectors with specific product requirements. They have expressed optimism that clearer communication, transparency, and policy evaluation will help ensure business continuity, workforce stability, and a resilient food supply chain. Stakeholders believe collaborative policy refinement can support economic activity while remaining consistent with the government’s broader food security objectives.
