Indonesia to Introduce a Single National Passport System with Lifetime Passport Numbers by 2027

Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights is preparing a major reform of national passport services, targeting full implementation in 2027. The initiative will introduce a single standardized Indonesian passport, eliminating distinctions between regular passports, laminated electronic passports, and polycarbonate electronic passports currently in circulation. This unified system is designed to simplify travel documentation, reduce public confusion, and ensure consistent passport standards across all immigration offices nationwide.

A key innovation of the reform is the introduction of a lifetime passport number, meaning Indonesian citizens will retain the same passport number even after renewing their document. This change is expected to significantly ease international visa applications, travel registrations, and data updates across banking and government systems. The rollout will be conducted gradually by exhausting existing passport stock, finalizing regulatory frameworks, and aligning internal immigration systems. Overall, the policy aims to enhance administrative efficiency, strengthen data security, and deliver a more modern, reliable, and citizen-friendly immigration service.
