The Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) achieved a significant milestone in 2025 by reaching full rice self-sufficiency, with total production of dry harvested grain (GKG) hitting 552,564 tons. This production translates to approximately 424,173 tons of available rice, meeting the targets set by the central government for sustainable self-sufficiency by 2026. This success is further evidenced by a 2.77% increase in the Farmer Terms of Trade (NTP) index toward the end of the year. Despite these gains, the sector faces a persistent threat from the steady decline of agricultural land, which has shrunk from 76,273 hectares in 2019 to 66,871 hectares in 2025.
To counter the shrinking land area, the DIY Department of Agriculture and Food Security is implementing advanced intensification strategies, including the use of superior seed varieties resilient to extreme weather and the adoption of modern agricultural mechanization like drone seeding. Innovative cultivation techniques such as corporate farming, integrated farming, and zero-waste systems are being promoted to maximize productivity on limited plots. Moving into 2026, the provincial government remains focused on stabilizing production through technical guidance for farmer groups, ensuring that the region’s food security remains robust despite ongoing urbanization and land conversion pressures.
