Indonesia is accelerating the development of its national bamboo industry as global demand for high–value bamboo products continues to increase. With more than 125 bamboo species spread across the archipelago, Indonesia ranks third globally in bamboo resource availability. The Ministry of Industry is promoting an integrated upstream-to-downstream bamboo ecosystem to enhance economic value, improve industrial competitiveness, and support green and circular economy principles. Bamboo is increasingly positioned as a sustainable alternative to wood due to its strength, flexibility, ease of processing, and superior resilience in earthquake-prone areas.
To unlock this potential, the government is shifting away from conventional utilization toward downstream industries such as construction, furniture, crafts, and bio-based products. Export demand highlights significant growth opportunities, particularly for bamboo-based container flooring, where global demand reaches around 1,500 cubic meters per month while domestic production remains limited. Domestic demand is also expanding rapidly in tourism hubs such as Bali, Mandalika, Lombok, and Labuan Bajo, with bamboo buildings valued at up to IDR 12 million per square meter and offering a faster investment break-even period of approximately three years. Supported by workforce development through the Bamboo Community Academy, standardized skills certification, and planned logistics hubs, Indonesia is well-positioned to scale up its bamboo industry and strengthen its role in sustainable industrial growth and global markets.
