Indonesia Accelerates Coconut Downstreaming, Targets Export Value of IDR 2,400 Trillion

Indonesia is intensifying efforts to strengthen its coconut downstream industry, aiming to raise the national export value to IDR 2,400 trillion while enhancing farmers’ welfare and promoting sustainable rural growth. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that coconut remains one of Indonesia’s most valuable commodities, contributing IDR 24 trillion in export value and positioning the country as the world’s largest coconut producer and exporter. The Ministry projects that through industrial downstreaming—covering processed products such as coconut oil, milk, coir fiber, and activated charcoal—the export value could multiply up to 100 times.

Amran highlighted that the downstreaming initiative has already shown results, particularly in North Maluku, where coconut prices increased from IDR 600 to IDR 3,500 per nut, a surge of nearly 500%. The program, which aligns with Indonesia’s broader agricultural investment roadmap valued at IDR 371 trillion, is expectedto create up to 8 million new jobs across agriculture, plantations, and livestock sectors. With national coconut production reaching 33 million tons in 2025, up from 29 million tons last year, the government sees coconut downstreaming as a cornerstone for economic independence and food sovereignty. Amran affirmed that this strategy not only boosts export competitiveness but also strengthens Indonesia’s leadership in the global coconut market.
