The Asosiasi Garment dan Textile Indonesia (AGTI) recently met with Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, Indonesia’s Minister of Finance, to present a strategic roadmap aimed at reinforcing the competitiveness of the country’s garment and textile industry. In the discussion, AGTI noted the growing challenge posed by increased imports, including second-hand clothing, and emphasised the need for a targeted support framework. The roadmap incorporates a SWOT analysis framework to map future opportunities and challenges within the textile sector. They also committed to detailing specific proposals for removing bottlenecks—such as simplifying licensing procedures under environmental regulation PP No. 28—for approval in the coming two weeks.
In addition to policy streamlining, AGTI emphasised collaboration among government bodies, industry players, workers and academics, grounded in the principle of social justice consistent with Indonesia’s Pancasila economic philosophy. They highlighted the positive impact of regulating used-clothing imports, which the association views as an opportunity to boost local producers. AGTI also noted that some members are expanding production capacity and planning new factory openings, reinforcing that the sector remains growth-oriented rather than reducing workforce. The association intends to continue a regional road-show to strengthen networks with local governments, industry stakeholders and labour, with the goal of enhancing national textile competitiveness and even surpassing competitor countries.
