The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is rolling out a new certification scheme to ensure exported shrimp from Indonesia are free of the radioactive isotope Cesium-137. The agency’s Quality Control and Supervision unit has aligned its certification process with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) import regulation “Import Alert 99-52,” designating KKP as a certified entity for shrimp exports to the U.S. The initial export occurred on October 31, 2025, from the Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta to the ports of New York and Los Angeles, marking Indonesia’s aim to meet international safety and quality standards.
To execute the scheme, KKP is collaborating with the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (BAPETEN) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to test and monitor critical points in the shrimp production chain—especially in Java and Lampung regions—to guarantee shipments are Cs-137 free. This initiative responds to both global food safety expectations and Indonesia’s export ambitions, positioning the country’s shrimp industry as internationally competitive and compliant with stringent safety alerts.
