Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, Eko S.A. Cahyanto, representing Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, met with SAIC Motor Corp. Vice President Zang Qing in Shanghai on October 9. The meeting, also attended by PT SGMW Motor Indonesia CEO Tang Wensheng, discussed strengthening automotive partnerships between Indonesia and China, especially in eco-friendly vehicle development and ASEAN market expansion. The Indonesian government appreciated SAIC’s contribution to the EV sector and expressed hope for further collaboration in producing environment-friendly vehicles suited to Indonesian consumers.
SAIC Motor, a major Chinese state-owned automaker, has global production bases including in Indonesia, where it operates PT SGMW. The company locally manufactures 13 out of 19 launched models and builds local battery production through MAGIC Battery Wuling. With 77+ local suppliers, PT SGMW aims to reach 60% – 80% local content (TKDN) in battery electric vehicles (BEVs). By 2025, exports are expected to exceed 11% of production, reaching 15 countries. SAIC targets expanding its ASEAN market presence through over 170 sales-service outlets in Indonesia and requested continued tax incentives. The Indonesian government responded positively, emphasizing its support for EV growth, investment, and SAIC’s role in Indonesia’s EV ecosystem development.
