Implementation and Utilisation of Coal to Promote National Energy Diversification

In a recent technical guidance event held by BBPMB tekMIRA in West Bandung Regency, the government emphasised coal’s strategic role in advancing Indonesia’s national energy diversification, particularly to reduce dependence on subsidised fuels affecting households and small-to-medium industries. Coal currently contributes about 40% to the country’s primary energy mix through its use in electricity generation, but there is growing pressure, both domestically and globally, to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions. To meet these challenges, downstream coal processing is being prioritised; tekMIRA plays a central role through developing innovations, setting technical standards, and ensuring product quality. The institution is also pushing to support industries in applying technologies such as coal gasification, upgrading, briquetting, and biomass co-firing.

TekMIRA has established research and testing facilities, including pilot plants for gasification, coal upgrade installations, and co-firing systems. These are intended to develop value-added coal products that can help make energy more affordable and sustainable, especially given rising fossil fuel costs. The initiative also involves broad stakeholder collaboration—industry players, academics, and energy sector officials—and includes demonstrations of various coal‐processing equipment like mini gasifiers, fluidised bed gasifiers, pyrolysis units, and small-scale boilers. The aim is to translate technological potential into real applications, particularly to benefit communities and small industries, while strengthening national energy security and supporting economic growth.
