In 2025, West Sumatra (Sumbar) will receive agricultural seed assistance via Indonesia’s Additional Expenditure Budget (ABT). The aid includes seeds sufficient for planting 5,000 hectares of corn, 2,000 hectares of coffee, and 100 hectares of coconut. The announcement was made by Indonesia’s Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, during a meeting with Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah and other provincial leaders.
The goals of this seed aid are to boost agricultural productivity, improve the economic conditions of local farmers, and open up new business opportunities. The government will closely monitor the implementation of the aid – regions that do not use the seed assistance effectively may not receive support in future years. Meanwhile, the provincial government of Sumatra Barat commits to increasing production not only of rice (where it already claims self-sufficiency), but also other commodities like corn, coconut, cocoa, and coffee. Additionally, the governor has requested further downstream processing of gambir (a plant resin) in the province, noting that seven districts and cities in West Sumatra are major gambir producers—yielding over 26,912 tons in 2024.
