The Central Java provincial government is set to receive IDR 135 billion from Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) to boost downstreaming in its plantation sector. The funds will focus on expanding land use and improving productivity for three key commodities: sugarcane, coffee, and coconut. The sugarcane initiative in particular is significant, targeting around 11,000 hectares of land. The program is expected to run from September to early December 2025, during which provincial and local governments must complete the set plantation zones.
Governor Ahmad Luthfi has pledged full support and has directed related departments to coordinate closely with district and city governments to ensure the program’s successful implementation. As background, Central Java is among Indonesia’s top producers for these commodities: in 2024, the province yielded nearly 3.72 million tons of sugarcane from about 58,600 hectares, produced 26,500+ tons of coffee from 47,700+ hectares, and harvested 161,200+ tons of coconut from about 200,800 hectares. Sugarcane is especially critical to meet national shortfalls — there’s currently a 500,000-ton gap in consumer sugar and a 4-5 million ton deficit for industrial sugar.
