PT Sinergi Wana Segara (SIWA) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding as part of a strategic collaboration to strengthen the maritime economic sector, focusing particularly on the utilisation of research and innovation results in the field of seaweed and its applications. The maritime economic sector is particularly important, given Indonesia's vast marine potential as an archipelago, including the seaweed sector. Indonesia's seaweed sector has the potential to produce high-quality products that meet global standards. In line with its commitment to high occupational health and safety standards, PT SIWA has implemented various measures, including the development of new technologies such as a blockchain system for smart farming and the application of halal technology in seafood processing. Alongside this, PT SIWA is actively empowering coastal communities to improve the quality and quantity of seaweed and other seafood production.
BRIN's collaboration with PT SIWA is poised to deliver innovative solutions employing smart farming methods in seaweed processing and cultivation, enhancing efficiency and environmental sustainability. Indonesia's year-round seaweed production capacity holds significant potential for growth, positioning the country to emerge as a prominent producer of raw materials and a centre of maritime technology innovation on the global stage. The partnership between BRIN and PT SIWA is anticipated to stimulate the growth of research-based industries, ranging from nurseries to the design of cultivation vessels and more efficient production systems. Research and innovation are conducted to enhance and standardise seaweed raw materials, ensuring added value. Therefore, it is essential to utilise, develop and increase the added value of seaweed to ensure high economic value and encourage the development of the maritime sector.
