Industrial Sector Exports Maintain Positive Performance

The national industrial sector remains aggressive in breaking into international markets amid the difficult times of the Covid-19 pandemic. The processing industry's non-oil and gas exports during January-September 2020 were recorded at US $ 94.36 billion."This achievement shows that the manufacturing sector still contributes the most to the total value of national exports in the same period," said Head of Data and Information Center of the Ministry of Industry R. Janu Suryanto in Jakarta, Friday (23/10).

Based on BPS data, cumulatively, Indonesia's export value in January-September 2020 is at US $ 117.19 billion. Meanwhile, the shipping value contribution from the manufacturing sector exceeded 80.5%. "The manufacturing trade balance in the January-September 2020 period was a surplus of US $ 8.87 billion," said Janu. The food industry has made brilliant performance, with export value reaching US $ 21.31 billion, an increase of 10.5% compared to the same period in 2019. This was followed by the base metal industry, which recorded an export value of US $ 16.96 billion, an increase of 30.7% from the achievements in the same period in 2019. Then, the export value of the chemical industry and goods made from chemicals exceeded US $ 9 billion.

Meanwhile, the textile and apparel industry shipment figures exceeded US $ 8 billion. Also, the paper and paper goods industry recorded an export value of up to US $ 5.16 billion."In January-September 2020, there are a number of industrial sectors whose export performance has increased significantly from last year," said Janu. Sectors that experienced positive export growth of more than 10% include the printing and recording media reproduction industry with an export value of US $ 29.78 million (27.8%), the furniture industry with an export value of US $ 1.59 billion (15.2% ), as well as the pharmaceutical industry, chemical medicinal products and traditional medicines with an export value of US $ 484.79 million (10.1%). The export performance of the manufacturing industry in September 2020 increased compared to the previous month. "The trade balance for the manufacturing industry in September 2020 also recorded a surplus of US $ 2.04 billion," he added. The export value of the processing industry in September 2020 was recorded at US $ 11.56 billion, an increase of 7.3% (mom) which reached US $ 10.77 billion. When compared to September 2019, the export performance of the manufacturing industry increased by 6.6% (yoy). "In September 2020, China became the main export destination for the processing industry from Indonesia, followed by the United States, Japan, Singapore and India," he said. In order to expand export market access for industries in the country, the Ministry of Industry continues to encourage comprehensive cooperation with several potential and non-traditional countries.

Export Orientation Industry
Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the government is prioritizing the development of an export-oriented industrial sector. This effort is deemed to be able to fix current economic structural problems, namely the trade balance deficit and the current account deficit. It is known, he continued, that the contribution of the manufacturing sector still dominates the national export value achievement to date. "So, this is one of the points for the government to pay special attention to the development of the manufacturing industry sector," he explained.

The Ministry of Industry has mapped 15 sectors that will receive development priorities to boost export performance. These sectors include the palm oil processing industry and its derivatives; food; paper and paper articles; crumb rubber, tires and rubber gloves; wood and articles of wood; and textiles and textile products. Furthermore, the footwear industry; cosmetics, soaps and cleaning agents; four-wheeled motorized vehicles; power cable; iron pipes and pipe joints; agricultural machine tools; consumer electronics; jewelry; as well as crafts.
