Sustainable Economy Key to Indonesian Tourism as a Global Destination

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf) Menteri Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif/Kepala Badan Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif (Menparekraf/Kabaparekraf) Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno emphasized the importance of quality and sustainable tourism practices as the main foundation for Indonesia's economic development, particularly in the tourism and creative economy sectors, contributing to the vision of "Indonesia Emas 2045". Speaking at the "AVPN Global" event in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Tuesday (23/4/2024), Sandiaga highlighted Indonesia's potential as a global tourism destination through knowledge-based, green and blue economy initiatives, as well as inclusive and sustainable economic practices. Indonesia has previously voiced its commitment to sustainable practices in international forums, such as during the G20 Presidency in 2022 and Indonesia's Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023, showcasing its leadership in global economic recovery and impressive achievements to restore post-pandemic economic confidence domestically and internationally. Sandiaga noted Indonesia's strong economic performance, with an average annual GDP growth exceeding 5% over the past decade, underscoring the nation's economic resilience.

The commitment to sustainable tourism is demonstrated through various ministry programs, including the Clean, Healthy, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability (CHSE) program, the Indonesian Village Tourism Award (ADWI), carbon footprint calculations, waste management assistance, and support programs. Sandiaga outlined several programs to support future economic development, including the promotion of five Super Priority Tourism Destinations, aiming to diversify tourism beyond Bali. Additionally, Indonesia offers Special Economic Zones (SEZ) for Tourism across the country, presenting investment opportunities in accommodation, food and beverage, regenerative wellness and health tours, as well as various attractive options in the creative and digital economy sectors. Sandiaga's remarks underscore Indonesia's commitment to sustainable tourism practices and its efforts to leverage tourism and the creative economy for inclusive and sustainable economic growth, aligning with the vision of "Indonesia Emas 2045".
