DJPb and the West Sumatra Provincial Government Agree to Make Rendang a Leading Export Commodity.

Kantor Wilayah Ditjen Perbendaharaan (DJPb) Provinsi Sumatra Barat has agreed to collaborate with the Provincial Government of West Sumatra, as well as the District and City Governments, to establish rendang as a leading export commodity in the future. Syukriah HG, the Head of DJPb West Sumatra, stated that they are currently in discussions with local governments to prepare plans for making rendang a prominent export commodity. "We are currently in discussions with the Governor of West Sumatra and mayors, addressing technical aspects and other related matters. We are committed to realizing this ambitious goal of elevating rendang to international recognition," he stated on Monday (25/3/2024).Syukriah explained that while West Sumatra has been successful in exporting rendang seasoning, the tonnage remains small, thus failing to provide foreign exchange for the country and revenue sharing for local governments. Recognizing the promising potential, DJPb, mandated by the Ministry of Finance, aims to assist in boosting the local economy through collaboration with local governments to stimulate positive impacts on both local governments and SMEs.

"The export scheme and other details will be further discussed. However, achieving this goal will not be easy, but I believe that together, nothing is impossible," he emphasized. Syukriah further conveyed that, based on the latest communication with Governor Mahyeldi, the plan to establish rendang as a leading export commodity will begin by involving SMEs engaged in rendang production. "Rendang seasoning will be exported, while cooked rendang will be prepared to fill the domestic market," he clarified. Regarding the discussion on exporting cooked rendang, it has been hindered by the issue of meat. In countries like the Middle East, beef is cheaper than in Indonesia, leading them to prefer purchasing rendang seasoning only. Syukriah noted that if the plan materializes, it will positively impact West Sumatra's exports, generating foreign exchange for the country and revenue sharing for local governments. Additionally, it will promote economic advancement for SMEs involved in rendang production, both domestically and internationally."We will assist SMEs with permits and other requirements, as exporting products requires meeting certain standards. We hope that this will stimulate economic activity, diversifying from commodities such as CPO and rubber. Now, we have rendang, prepared as an organic product capable of competing in the international market," he concluded.
