The Ornamental Fish Exports from South Sumatra Province Reached IDR 448.25 Million Throughout 2023

The Quarantine Office of South Sumatra Province (Sumsel) reported that in 2023, ornamental fish exports amounted to IDR 448.25 million. These exports mainly comprised freshwater ornamental fish such as Botia, Brazilian Arowana, Spotted Fire Eel (Tilan), Khuliload, Tigerfish, and Betutu fish from the region. Head of Quarantine in Sumsel, Kostan Manalu, disclosed that these exports, totaling 31 shipments, were destined for Singapore. He noted that Singapore's primary interest lies in Botia, Khuliload, Tilan, and Brazilian Arowana varieties. In ensuring the safety and quality of exported fish, Manalu emphasized their commitment to implementing good fish quarantine practices (CKIB) at two Quarantine Fish Installation (IKI) facilities, whether owned by individuals or companies. This commitment extends to maintaining standards in various aspects of the export process, including facility provision, infrastructure, procedures, water quality, fish health, and disease and pest control.

The recent inspections conducted on Tuesday (19/3/2024) and Thursday (21/3/2024) aimed to encourage IKIs in the region to adhere to established regulations and procedures. This initiative is crucial for maintaining quality, preventing diseases and pests, and supporting the growth of the national fisheries sector. Furthermore, Manalu highlighted the readiness of Quarantine Sumsel to provide guidance and technical assistance to exporters and potential exporters to meet applicable requirements. As part of their role as economic facilitators, the Quarantine Office offers support to business entities, ensuring that inspection processes are transparent, consistent, and well-documented. This approach aims to demonstrate IKIs' consistent application of CKIB, fostering trust and reliability in the export process.
