Bank Indonesia Expands Export Opportunities for Modest Fashion from South Sulawesi

The Bank Indonesia Representative Office (BIRO) of South Sulawesi Province will host the South Sulawesi Economic Sharia Week or Pesyar Sulsel 2024 from March 23 to April 1, 2024. This event aims to open up broader export markets for the modest fashion sector and halal products from this region. Pesyar Sulsel 2024 will feature over 100 entrepreneurs and designers, including prominent designers at both the international and national levels. The event will also showcase various leading national brands that have successfully penetrated the global market, with the hope of providing adequate knowledge transfer to local products to enhance their scale to the next level. "As in previous years, various modest fashion products from South Sulawesi have successfully penetrated export markets, especially Malaysia. This time, the hope is that more products from South Sulawesi can be exported," said Rizki Ernadi Wimanda, Head of BIRO South Sulawesi, to reporters on Wednesday (20/3/2024). He explained that global demand for sharia-compliant products continues to increase. There are more than 2 billion Muslims worldwide who spent around USD 2.29 trillion in 2023 on food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fashion, travel, and recreation sectors. This figure grew by 14.5% compared to the previous year.

Indonesia's halal product exports also recorded a very high value. The export share of halal products to Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries in 2022 amounted to USD 13.38 billion. This condition presents opportunities for sharia economy products, especially from this region, to go global. "Globally, Indonesia ranks third in the modest fashion sector after Turkey and Malaysia. On the other hand, traditional woven fabrics from South Sulawesi are very attractive as materials for modest fashion that have the potential to fill export markets," he explained. Therefore, Pesyar Sulsel 2024 is projected to be a catalyst for the development of modest fashion in South Sulawesi. It is hoped that this event can strengthen the branding of Indonesian modest fashion, increase literacy and inclusion in sharia economy and finance, and enhance the capacity of sharia entrepreneurs in this region.
