Ministry of Trade Prepares National Reference Laboratory to Improve Nutmeg Export Quality

The Ministry of Trade, through the Directorate General of Consumer Protection and Trade Compliance, is enhancing the quality of nutmeg exports by establishing a national reference laboratory. This initiative aims to meet European Union standards and mitigate food safety risks related to mycotoxins detected in nutmeg. Increased notifications from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) may elevate physical inspections at export ports from 20% to 50% by 2023. Collaborative efforts are vital to address rejection issues, with recommendations for inter-agency agreements and action plans.
Compliance with EU regulations requires updated sampling protocols and recognized national reference laboratories. Stakeholder engagement along the supply chain, from farmers to laboratories, ensures traceability and quality assurance. Arief Rachman from the Indonesian Embassy in Brussels stresses the importance of supply chain improvements and competent national reference laboratories. Training sessions focus on effective sampling methods and integrated surveillance for traceability and quarantine protocols to enhance product quality control.
