The economy of Riau grew by 4.21%, contributing 5.00 % to the national economy.

In 2023, Riau's economy, measured by its Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), grew by 4.21%, experiencing a slight slowdown from the 4.55% growth in 2022. Despite this, Riau remains the sixth-largest province in Indonesia by GRDP and the second-largest outside of Java. The province contributed 5.00% to the national economy spatially in 2023, as stated by the Acting Governor of Riau, SF Hariyanto. This growth was observed across all sectors of the economy. The GRDP of Riau in 2023, based on current prices, reached IDR 1,026.47 trillion, and based on constant 2010 prices, it reached IDR 551.83 trillion. Asep Riyadi, the Head of the Central Statistics Agency of Riau Province, noted that the highest growth in production occurred in the Construction sector, at 9.17%. In terms of expenditure, the highest growth was recorded in the Component of Nonprofit Institutions Serving Households (PK-LNPRT), at 8.90%. Comparing the fourth quarter of 2023 to the same period in 2022, Riau's economy grew by 4.02% (year-on-year).


The Construction sector experienced the highest production growth at 14.91%, while Government Consumption Expenditure (PK-P) saw the highest expenditure growth at 15.38%. Quarter-on-quarter growth in Riau's economy for the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter was 0.10%. In terms of production, the Other Services sector experienced the highest growth at 22.40%, while Government Consumption Expenditure (PK-P) recorded the highest expenditure growth at 24.47%. The 2023 economy of Riau, excluding the oil and gas sector, grew by 4.55%, a slowdown from the same quarter in the previous year, which grew by 5.00%.
