The Export Performance of Jewelry from East Java Shines, Majority Sent to Switzerland

In January 2024, jewelry continued to serve as a pivotal export commodity for East Java (Jatim), contributing significantly to the region's export performance. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Jatim revealed that jewelry commodities, including those made of various precious metals or not, accounted for 15.61% of Jatim's total export value, amounting to USD 310.73 million. Most of these jewelry items were exported to Switzerland, totaling USD 103.20 million. Despite a month-to-month decline of 19.87% in the export performance of Jatim's jewelry from December 2023 to January 2024, witnessing a decrease from USD 387.77 million to USD 310.73 million, there was a substantial year-on-year increase of 272.78% compared to January 2023, when jewelry exports totaled USD 83.35 million. Other significant export commodities included pure copper cathodes, valued at USD 161.94 million, mainly exported to Malaysia, and crude oil, with exports worth USD 81.65 million, entirely sent to Thailand.

Among the top 15 non-oil and gas export commodities from Jatim in January 2024, crude oil experienced the highest percentage increase in exports compared to the previous month, rising by 585.02% from USD 11.92 million to USD 81.65 million. Conversely, precious metal waste and scrap witnessed the most significant percentage decrease in exports, dropping by 72.04% from USD 250.48 million to USD 70.03 million. Overall, Jatim's export performance in January 2024 decreased by 7.39% compared to December 2023, totaling USD 1.99 billion. However, there was a notable increase of 16.75% compared to January 2023. The decline in export value compared to the previous month was primarily driven by a larger decrease in the non-oil and gas sector, which fell by 10.70% to USD 1.90 billion, contributing 95.67% to the total exports. Meanwhile, the oil and gas sector witnessed a significant increase of 413.42% to USD 86.22 million, accounting for 4.33% of Jatim's total exports in January 2024. Compared to January 2023, the oil and gas sector's exports also increased by 13.56%.
