BPS: Non-Oil and Gas Sector Continues to Dominate Maluku Exports

In January 2024, the non-oil and gas sector continued to dominate exports from Maluku Province, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). The province exported commodities such as tuna, grouper, sea fish, and crabs, amounting to USD 8.22 million. This figure represented a 58.63% decrease compared to December 2023, which saw exports totaling USD 19.88 million from both oil and non-oil sectors. Despite the decrease from the previous month, January 2024 exports showed a 37.60% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The main export destinations for Maluku in January 2024 included Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, China, the United States, and Ghana. Notably, China accounted for the largest share of exports, amounting to USD 6.71 million. Total commodity exports from ports outside Maluku reached USD 4.79 million in January 2024, marking a significant 324.72% increase from December 2023. However, this figure represented a 31.02% decrease compared to January 2023.

Exports from Maluku in January 2024 were facilitated through ports such as Yos Sudarso Port, Tual Port, and Pattimura Airport. The volume of exports in January 2024 reached 1.64 thousand tons, experiencing a significant 95.98% decrease compared to December 2023. While the volume of mineral fuel exports plummeted by 100.00%, exports of fish and crustaceans saw a remarkable increase of approximately 611.22%. Additionally, in 2023, Maluku exported 616 tons of grade A tuna to Japan, totaling USD 5.2 million, as reported by the Ambon Marine and Fisheries Quality Control and Inspection Agency (BP2MHKP). This represented a significant increase from 2022 when 510 tons of tuna, valued at USD 3.2 million, were exported to Japan. Grade A tuna from Maluku has become highly sought after in the Japanese market, primarily for consumption as sashimi. BP2MHKP ensures the quality of these commodities is maintained from the fishermen's catch to the hands of consumers in Japan, emphasizing the importance of quality control throughout the supply chain.
