The Food and Beverage Industry: Pillar of Indonesia's Economy

Director General of Agro Industry at the Ministry of Industry, Putu Juli Ardika, emphasized the strategic role of the food and beverage (F&B) industry in bolstering Indonesia's economic growth. Speaking in Jakarta on Saturday, Putu stated that the F&B industry is pivotal for Indonesia's economic expansion. During the Self-Assessment INDI 4.0 and Launching Program for the Transformation of the Food and Beverage Industry towards Industry 4.0 in 2024, Putu highlighted that in 2023, the F&B industry contributed 39.10% to the non-oil and gas gross domestic product (GDP) and 6.55% to the national GDP. Despite facing setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the F&B sector rebounded with a 4.47% growth in 2023 (year-on-year), according to Putu. Moreover, Putu disclosed that the F&B industry achieved a positive trade balance of USD 25.21 billion in 2023, with exports totaling USD 41.70 billion and imports at USD 16.49 billion. Investment in the F&B industry continued to grow, reaching IDR 85.10 trillion in 2023, as Putu noted.

The Ministry of Industry is committed to enhancing the readiness of the F&B industry to transition towards Industry 4.0, aiming to improve competitiveness through the adoption of digital technology and innovation across production, distribution, and marketing. Putu emphasized the importance of the F&B industry as a priority sector for national economic growth and its potential for further acceleration through Industry 4.0 implementation. Recognizing the significance, Putu stated that the F&B industry is a priority sector in the Making Indonesia 4.0 roadmap. Efforts include encouraging F&B industries to transform into Indonesia Industry 4.0 Readiness Index (INDI 4.0), as Putu highlighted. Through INDI 4.0, the level of industry readiness for digital transformation towards Industry 4.0 can be assessed. Since its launch, 115 F&B companies/factories have conducted Self-Assessment INDI 4.0. Putu expressed hope for increased enthusiasm among F&B companies to explore Industry 4.0 adoption and collaborate, aiming to establish a mutually beneficial ecosystem in the future.
