Indonesian Agricultural Exports Increase by 5.32% in January 2024

In January 2024, Indonesia's agricultural exports saw a 5.32% increase compared to the previous month and a 0.11% increase compared to the previous year, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Widyasanti, noted this growth amidst declines in other non-oil and gas industries, making agriculture the sole sector experiencing both monthly and yearly growth. The total non-oil and gas exports by sector in January 2024 amounted to USD 19.13 billion. The agricultural sector significantly contributed USD 374.4 million to this total. This increase is evident compared to December 2023 when agricultural exports were recorded at USD 355.5 million.

The growth in agricultural exports was driven by key commodities, including palm oil and bird's nest products. Meanwhile, other sectors experienced declines, with the manufacturing sector down by 4.13% and the mining sector down by 23.93% compared to the previous month. Kuntoro Boga Andri, Head of the Public Relations and Public Information Bureau at the Ministry of Agriculture, emphasized the strategic importance of the agricultural sector in the national economy. He stated that agriculture is crucial for strengthening the nation's economy, with the government continually promoting increased production and downstreaming of national agriculture. Andri added that the Ministry of Agriculture is focused on increasing rice and maize production as primary and strategic commodities with targets for self-sufficiency and contribution as a global food source. The ministry continues its efforts to enhance strategic agricultural commodities to meet domestic needs and boost exports.
