Government Accelerates Task Force to Boost National Exports

In response to potential declines in global demand, the Indonesian government has established a Task Force (Satgas) aimed at promoting the growth of national exports. The initiative, formed on September 20, 2023, through Presidential Decree Number 24 of 2023, seeks to mitigate potential setbacks in labor-intensive, export-oriented industries and preempt the possibility of recession in countries outside the People's Republic of China, the United States, and the European Union. Spearheaded by Minister of Coordinating Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, the Task Force encompasses key figures from various ministries, including Trade, Finance, State Secretariat, Home Affairs, Industry, Cooperatives and SMEs, Foreign Affairs, Environment and Forestry, Investment/BKPM, Agriculture, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, State-Owned Enterprises, Cabinet Secretary, and Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN).

Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Susiwijono Moegiarso, highlighted the task force's dual focus: bolstering existing export markets and exploring new ones such as India, Africa, and Latin America. To ensure effective implementation, the government emphasizes expeditious completion of trade agreements, identification of export potentials, mapping of potential products, and continuous enhancement of domestic product competitiveness. Susiwijono stated that a Technical Meeting or Coordination Meeting was held to discuss the mechanism and work plan of the Task Force. Further high-level ministerial or directorate team meetings are scheduled for the middle of next month, during which each sub-task force will present priority work program reports. The move is seen as part of a broader strategy to navigate challenges in the global economic landscape and seize new opportunities for Indonesian exports. Minister Airlangga Hartarto, as the Chair of the Directorate Team, is expected to lead efforts to enhance export capabilities and reinforce Indonesia's position in the international trade arena. The government aims to address potential economic downturns by proactively strategizing and leveraging diverse export markets to sustain and elevate Indonesia's economic performance.
