Batu City's Kokedama Penetrates Japanese Export Market, Contract Value Reaches IDR 800 Million

Kokedama, a traditional Japanese plant art, crafted by residents of Batu City, has achieved a breakthrough in the Japanese export market through an exclusive partnership with Bong Syoji. Co, Ltd. Originating from the Japanese words 'koke' (moss) and 'dama' (ball), kokedama involves planting in a ball-shaped arrangement, traditionally using moss. However, Batu City's adaptation employs coconut husk for the planting medium. Hiroyuki Ookubo from Bong Syoji. Co, Ltd, commended Batu's unique atmosphere resembling Japan. Expressing gratitude, he noted the potential for various indigenous Batu products, including clay pots. Creative Kokedama's owner, Dwi Lili Indayani, disclosed the exclusive collaboration's significance, foreseeing the export of over 20,000 kokedama products to Japan in 2024, building on the successful 2023 export.

The estimated 2024 contract value with the Japanese company stands at IDR 800 million for an exclusive arrangement covering approximately 20,000 kokedama products. Production involves collaboration with local entrepreneurs, notably utilizing coconut husk. Acting Mayor Aries Agung Paewai stressed Batu City's interconnectedness between tourism, SMEs, and agriculture, with kokedama embodying this synergy. He expressed hope for continued youth-driven kokedama initiatives. Aries highlighted the local government's commitment to export support, ensuring Japanese company confidence by being present during the contract signing. He emphasized Batu City's extensive export potential, citing successful horticultural exports to the United States and Australia, signaling a desire for further expansion.
