Opening Alternative Market Access for Shrimp Exports by Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is actively exploring alternative market access for Indonesian shrimp commodities in several countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe, including the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, emphasizes the importance of strengthening global shrimp market access to open potential non-traditional markets. Trenggono identifies China as a promising alternative market for Indonesian shrimp, citing China's significant annual growth in the shrimp market, reaching USD 6.3 billion in 2022, with Indonesia holding a small 1.8% share. In efforts to open alternative market access, Trenggono urges consolidation and active participation from shrimp farmers, suppliers, processors, shrimp associations, APRINDO (Association of Indonesian Retail Entrepreneurs), PPJI (Association of Indonesian Catering Services), PHRI (Association of Hotels and Restaurants Indonesia), and Horeka (hotel, restaurant, and cafe) to boost domestic market absorption.

Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fisheries Products (PDSPKP), Budi Sulistiyo, states that a global and domestic shrimp market analysis is underway, with results distributed periodically to industry players. Emphasizing the crucial synergy and collaboration for shrimp enhancement, Budi echoes Minister Trenggono's sentiments on the commodity's vast potential. Additionally, KKP encourages shrimp exporters to explore markets beyond the United States amid government efforts to resolve anti-dumping and countervailing duties issues. Previously, KKP formulated strategic measures in response to anti-dumping and countervailing duties allegations against frozen shrimp exports to the U.S. by the American Shrimp Processors Association (ASPA). The allegations involve all frozen tropical shrimp, excluding fresh and breaded shrimp. Indonesia, along with Vietnam, Ecuador, and India, faces countervailing duties accusations, while anti-dumping charges target Indonesia and Ecuador. The Sunset Reviews 2022 reveal that four countries, including China, India, Thailand, and Vietnam, still impose Anti-Dumping Duties, ranging from 5.34% to a maximum of 112.81%. In navigating these challenges, KKP is strategically positioning itself to ensure the sustainability and global competitiveness of Indonesia's shrimp industry.
