The Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Agency (BKHIT) of Maluku has confirmed the shipment of 660 Maluku-origin mangrove crabs to Singapore to meet market demand in the country. The process is being closely monitored by the Pattimura Airport Ambon service unit and BKHIT Maluku officers. According to Abdur Rohman, the Head of BKHIT Maluku, this early 2024 shipment marks the opening of fishery exports from Maluku to the ASEAN market. The 660 crabs have undergone various feasibility tests, including type, size, and quantity, complying with applicable regulations.
Abdur Rohman emphasized that before export, the mangrove crabs undergo physical examination and feasibility checks to ensure their quality, as outlined in the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Regulation No. 16 of 2022, particularly Article 8 paragraph (1) regarding the capture, traffic, and/or release of crabs. He stated, "Yes, mangrove crabs must undergo physical examination and feasibility checks before being exported to ensure their quality." Crabs not meeting the specified standards will be released and contribute to the local resource for the community. The cargo shipment through Pattimura Airport has been a routine procedure, with BKHIT officers conducting thorough document and shipping requirement checks to guarantee the safety of the transported commodities. Abdur encouraged the people of Maluku to prevent the threat of pests and diseases that could affect various fisheries, agriculture, animal, and plant commodities. He urged reporting to BKHIT before engaging in exports or shipments outside the region to mitigate these risks effectively.
