Export in December 2023 Rises by 1.89%, Surpasses USD 22.41 Billion

In December 2023, Indonesia's export performance demonstrated a noteworthy increase, reaching USD 22.41 billion, marking a 1.89% rise compared to the previous month. The Deputy of Distribution and Service Statistics at BPS, Pudji Ismartini, highlighted this achievement during a press conference on the announcement of the December 2023 export-import data. Breaking down the figures, non-oil and gas exports totaled USD 20.93 billion, reflecting a 1.06% increase from the preceding month's USD 20.72 billion. Meanwhile, oil and gas exports amounted to USD 1.48 billion, experiencing a significant 15.28% surge compared to the USD 1.28 billion in the previous month. The surge in oil and gas exports was primarily fueled by a 78.67% increase in the export value of oil products. The upswing in export values for December 2023 was largely propelled by the growth in non-oil and gas exports, particularly in the categories of fuel minerals, witnessing a 10.07% increase, and metallic ore, silver, and ash, which soared by 37.37%. Further elaborating on the breakdown, non-oil and gas exports in December 2023 were dominated by shipments to China at USD 5.77 billion, followed by the United States at USD 2.07 billion and India at USD 1.83 billion. Cumulatively, Indonesia's export value from January to December 2023 reached USD 258.82 billion.

Economist Josua Pardede from Bank Permata projected that Indonesia's trade surplus would persist in December 2023, albeit with a reduced value. The anticipated surplus is USD 2.00 billion. Pardede predicts a trade surplus for the entirety of 2023 at approximately USD 35.63 billion. While commodity prices remained relatively stable in December 2023, key export commodities such as coal and palm oil, the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for Indonesia's main trading partners indicated a decline, signaling a slowdown in global demand.
