Indonesia-Vietnam Cooperate in Lobster Farming for Global Supply Chain Entry

Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, affirms the collaboration in lobster aquaculture development between the Republic of Indonesia (RI) and Vietnam. The partnership aims to integrate into the global supply chain, strengthening the position as a cultured fisheries supplier in the Asian region. Minister Trenggono emphasizes the need for both nations to learn from each other, expressing the potential for becoming regional leaders through combined efforts. He highlights Vietnam's remarkable achievements, where fisheries product entry tariffs to Europe are at zero percent, and the export value exceeds USD 10 billion. This collaboration is seen as an opportunity for Indonesia to enhance its presence in the global fisheries market. The minister, accompanying President Joko Widodo on a visit to Vietnam, notes the significance of the trip regarding fisheries cooperation and lobster cultivation development in Indonesia.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam previously signed a fisheries cooperation agreement last year. The minister anticipates that with the state visit, the realization of this cooperation can swiftly progress, particularly in the fisheries sector, including lobster farming. The collaboration is expected to drive downstream growth in Indonesia's fisheries sector, specifically for lobster commodities. It will also facilitate technology transfer and work ethic enhancement, empowering local lobster farmers. Acknowledging challenges in lobster farming, including feed issues and traditional cultivation methods, Minister Trenggono expresses optimism that the partnership will address these concerns. The collaboration aims to transform lobster larvae (BBL) from a susceptible commodity to smuggling into a regulated component, preventing financial losses for the country. The minister concludes by stating that working together will enable the exchange of good work ethics, providing a positive outlook for the lobster farming sector in Indonesia. The collaboration is part of Indonesia's efforts to become an integral part of the world's fisheries supply chain.
