Sardinia Leads Italy in Economic Impact of Fresh PGI Meats

In a notable achievement, Sardinia emerges as the top region in Italy, surpassing others in the economic impact of fresh meats carrying the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) mark. According to the 21st Ismea Qualivita 2023 report, the island achieved an impressive production value of 38 million euros in 2022, securing the leading position, with only Tuscany following closely at 20 million euros. This economic success is attributed to the substantial network of producers, exceeding 5 thousand, affiliated with the protection Consortium. Specifically, the Sardinian PGI lamb secures its place as the second-highest branded fresh meat in Italy concerning certified production. The Peninsula boasts a total of 6 certified fresh meats, contributing to a cumulative production value of 103 million euros in 2022. In the same year, 4478 tonnes of certified Sardinian Lamb PGI meat were produced and introduced to the market, generating a production value of 38 million euros, reflecting an 8.3% increase compared to 2021. Additionally, consumer value reached 61 million euros, marking a 3.1% growth from the previous year, while exports contributed 12 million euros, reflecting a 5.5% increase.

Nationally, the PGI Sardinian lamb secures the second-largest position in Italy after the Vitellone bianco dell'Appennino centrale PGI. It surpasses other sheep PGI meats, such as the Abbacchio romano PGI and the Agnello del Central Italia PGI, ranking fourth. Remarkably, in 2022, the PGI Sardinian lamb significantly contributed to positioning Sardinia as the fifth region in Italy in terms of economic value derived from the production of PGI and DOC brand products. This attested to an impressive 423 million euros of economic impact on the island, reflecting a substantial 22% growth in 2022. Battista Cualbu, President of the Consortium, underscores the significance of these numbers, highlighting the importance of the certified supply chain. Anticipating continued success, he mentions the consortium's investments in resources for promotion and international market presentations in 2023, including additional certifications and participation in various fairs and events.
