Streamlined Permitting Boosts Positive Investment Growth in Batam

In the dawn of 2024, Batam envisions a golden era for investments propelled by the facilitation of business operations and licensing procedures. The Chairman of the Indonesian Employers Association (APINDO) in Batam, Rafki Rasyid, notes a significant reduction in complaints from entrepreneurs regarding licensing processes, excluding those related to environmental permits. Rafki attributes the favorable investment climate in Batam to the improvements introduced by the Batam Authority (BP) and the Batam City Government. Notably, there has been a positive trend in investment climate development. However, challenges persist in obtaining environmental permits from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Rafki emphasizes the need for continuous improvement in investment services, urging stakeholders not to become complacent. Recognizing the competitive landscape, Rafki emphasizes that nations continuously enhance themselves and offer attractive investment incentives to potential investors.

Batam must remain vigilant, consistently improving to enhance its investment position. Rafki stresses the importance of leveraging the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) and Special Economic Zone (KEK) facilities to boost investment realization in Batam and the Riau Islands. It is crucial to capitalize on these facilities to prevent losing ground to regions with fewer investment incentives. Previous reports indicate that Batam's investment realization in Q3 2023 amounted to IDR 4.86 trillion (1,804 projects), with Foreign Direct Investment (PMA) at IDR 2.37 trillion (724 projects) and Domestic Direct Investment (PMDN) at IDR 2.49 trillion (1,080 projects). For the January-September 2023 period, the total investment realization was IDR 12.7 trillion (4,774 projects), comprising PMA at IDR 7.52 trillion (2,059 projects) and PMDN at IDR 5.18 trillion (2,715 projects). The achievement represents 92.36% of the set target of IDR 13.75 trillion for the same period, showcasing a growth of 72.43% Year on Year (YoY) and 26.91% Quarter on Quarter (QoQ). While recognizing these accomplishments, Rafki emphasizes the need for sustained efforts to optimize the investment potential in Batam, ensuring it remains competitive amid evolving global economic dynamics.
