The Government Boosts Fisheries Production through Blue Economy Model

Indonesia, known for its expansive maritime resources spanning 65% of its territory, has recognized the pivotal role of the sea in its economic landscape, notably in the fisheries sector. To maximize growth and sustainability, the nation aims to fortify its marine product competitiveness through a 'blue economy' framework. The 'blue economy' concept entails leveraging and sustainably managing marine resources for economic development. Under the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), efforts are ongoing to drive advancements, specifically in the sustainable management of marine resources. Reported data from January to September 2023 indicates Indonesia's fishery exports reached USD4.1 billion, representing 53% of the targeted USD7.6 billion. Meanwhile, non-tax revenue from the fisheries sector stood at IDR 1.1 trillion. Minister Wahyu Sakti Trenggono highlighted that nearly 99.84% of exported fishery products reached their destination countries, generating USD4.1 billion by Q3. Additionally, non-tax revenue from maritime and fisheries reached IDR 1.127 trillion by November 10, 2023. The KKP's performance indicators for Q3 2023 show fishery production at 18.5 million tons, encompassing 5.76 million tons from capture fisheries and 12.74 million tons from aquaculture, comprising 4.75 million tons of fish and 7.98 million tons of seaweed. Fishermen's average exchange rates (NTN) were at 105.89, and aquaculturists' at 105.07.

Indonesia's fishery sector contributed 6.78% to the GDP, with a 2.7% share in the national GDP, amounting to IDR 214.18 trillion. Despite commendable progress, challenges persist, including stiff competition for fresh fish raw materials and combating illegal and excessive fishing, posing threats to marine ecosystems and fishery resources. To counter these challenges, the Directorate-General for Strengthening the Competitiveness of Maritime and Fisheries Products (PDSPKP) is devising a strategy rooted in the blue economy, emphasizing standardization, innovation, traceability, logistics optimization, business empowerment, financing access, and market promotion. Director-General Budi Sulistiyo projects Indonesia's fishery products to align with market demands, targeting an export value of USD8.5 billion and domestic trade worth IDR 796.93 trillion by 2029. This strategy involves eco-friendly processing technology, quality raw materials, fair pricing, and efficient logistics systems, all integral to ensuring superior product quality and market dominance.
