The Export of Indonesian Coffee Has Sharply Increased by 35.71%

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia's coffee exports amounted to USD 1.14 billion with a volume of 433,780 tons in 2022. This showcased a 35.71% increase compared to the previous year, which stood at USD 842.52 million with a volume of 380,173 tons. Over the last decade, Indonesia's coffee exports fluctuated, reaching its peak at USD 1.24 billion in 2012 and hitting a low of USD 806.88 million in 2018. In terms of destinations, Indonesia primarily exported coffee to the United States valued at USD 268.55 million in the past year. Additionally, exports to Egypt amounted to USD 81.73 million, with significant amounts to Germany (USD 80.94 million), India (USD 71.65 million), and Belgium (USD 64.89 million). Notably, Japan stood at USD 59.09 million, followed by Malaysia (USD 53.13 million) and Italy (USD 49.98 million). Moelyono Soesilo, Chairman of the Specialty & Industry Department at the Indonesian Coffee Exporters Association (AEKI), emphasized Indonesia's irreplaceable position in providing robusta coffee, particularly for Italy's espresso production. Addressing concerns about the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), Moelyono suggested that the EU would be more impacted than Indonesia due to its higher coffee demand.

While acknowledging potential impacts, Moelyono highlighted Indonesia's optimistic outlook, especially given rising domestic consumption and interest from other countries amid the EU's regulations. Notably, Indonesia's 2022 coffee exports totaled USD 1 billion, with USD 230 million to Europe. However, projections for 2023 anticipate a decrease, especially in the second semester due to decreased production caused by wet droughts in 2022. The European Union has enforced the EUDR since mid-2023, imposing stringent criteria on products like palm oil, meat, coffee, wood, cocoa, rubber, soybeans, and derivatives entering the EU as of December 30, 2024. Beyond Indonesia, the global coffee trade involves major producers like Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Ethiopia, Honduras, Uganda, and Mexico, each contributing significantly to global coffee production and consumption. These countries have unique features distinguishing their coffee industries, such as Brazil's direct sun drying method, Vietnam's robusta coffee dominance, Colombia's renowned arabica beans, and Indonesia's robust production in various regions, notably Sumatera Selatan.
