Agri-food Sector Thrives in Italy with a Turnover of EUR 621 Billion, Contributing 15% to National Economy

Italy's agri-food sector remains a cornerstone of the national economy, contributing significantly with a robust turnover of EUR 621 billion, constituting 15% of the total national economic output. The findings, outlined in the Yearbook of Italian Agriculture 2022, affirm the resilience and vitality of the sector, now in its 76th year of evaluation. The regional dynamics reveal Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, and Veneto as leading contributors, generating over 42% of the total value, with additional substantial contributions from Campania, Lazio, and Piedmont, amounting to 22%. Noteworthy regional variations extend to sector composition, with the North emphasizing the food and beverage industry, while the South places a greater emphasis on agriculture and distribution. Foreign trade in 2022 witnessed record-breaking numbers, with imports reaching almost EUR 63 billion (a remarkable increase of 29.3%) and exports nearing EUR 60 billion (a significant uptick of 16%). Territorial nuances persist, with the Northern Regions commanding over 70% of national import and export flows, underscoring the agri-food sector's pivotal role. The first nine months of 2023 indicate a continued positive trend, marking a 7% increase in trade value. The agri-food industry contributes substantially to the bioeconomy, accounting for 60% and 11% of the entire production system, respectively. Despite a reduction in the number of companies, a notable exception is observed in general partnerships and public limited companies, experiencing a 2.4% increase. The food and beverage industry saw a 2% decrease in companies but recorded a 3% growth in employment, reflecting an overall increase in average company size.

Diversification in agriculture, engaging nearly 6% of companies, shows a doubling in value for those led by young entrepreneurs. Territorial concentration remains a driving force, with 3/4 of companies and 2/3 of diversification value situated in the North and Center. The sector's environmental efforts are commendable, achieving a 2.7% reduction in climate-altering emissions compared to 2021. The Yearbook emphasizes public spending on agriculture at EUR 12 billion, equivalent to 34% of the sector's added value from 2020-2022, primarily supported by EU, national, and regional funds. Despite external challenges, the agri-food system in Italy demonstrates resilience, portraying positive signs amid global uncertainties and exogenous factors.
