Substantial Surge: Over 17% Increase in Foreign Visitors to Italy During Christmas Season

Coldiretti's analysis of Bankitalia data forecasts a potential 17% surge in foreign travelers to Italy during the Christmas holidays if the current growth trend persists. This increase signals a notable recovery in international tourism, although it remains below pre-COVID levels. Italy has witnessed 68.5 million arrivals from abroad in the initial nine months of this year. Approximately 70% of these foreign visitors originate from the European Union, notably with substantial numbers arriving from the United Kingdom (5 million) and the United States (over 3 million). The positive trend in foreign arrivals corresponds with a 16% spending growth compared to the same period last year.

Foreign tourists are crucial for Italy's tourism, particularly in prominent destinations, as these visitors typically boast considerable economic means, according to Coldiretti. Over one-third of their expenditure is allocated to dining experiences, including meals at various eateries and street food at markets, festivals, and local fairs. Food expenditures dominate holiday budgets in Italy, indicating a primary motivation for many tourists. The surge in food and wine tourism is credited to numerous valorization initiatives, such as local festivals and wine routes. This scenario underscores the significant role of Italy's enogastronomic heritage in shaping the "Made in Italy" holiday experience.

Coldiretti stresses that economic and employment opportunities are reliant on effectively showcasing this heritage, including a rich array of culinary traditions. Italy leads globally in food and wine tourism, boasting Europe's greenest agriculture with 5,450 traditional specialties, 325 Dop/Igp/Stg recognized EU specialties, and 415 DOC/Docg wines. Additionally, Italy excels in organic farming with around 86,000 organic agricultural enterprises and refrains from cultivating GMOs, while 10,000 farmers participate in direct sales initiatives.
